Neglecting other important parts of your life due to your obssesion with work can be pretty damaging.While I certainly agree that getting so wrapped up in your work that you lose your sense of self (and therefore have a much more emotionally traumatic experience if you are laid off or fired), there’s also the concern of distancing yourself too much.If you don’t appear to enjoy what you do or you’re constantly keeping one foot out the door while looking for new opportunities, that unemployment hammer might come down faster than you think. The key, I think, is finding something you enjoy doing so that going to work puts you in a naturally positive mood and you’re genuinely enthusiastic about helping the company improve.
